Father Daniel L. Mode, ordained in 1992 as a Roman Catholic priest for the Diocese of Arlington, Va., is author of The Grunt Padre: The Service and Sacrifice of Father Vincent Robert Capodanno (CMJ Marian Publishers, 2000), the story of the life and heroic death of the Maryknoll priest who as a Navy chaplain assigned to the Marine Corps was killed in Vietnam in September 1967. Father Mode has been a Navy chaplain since 1998. He served in Afghanistan from May 2005 to March 2007 with Operation Enduring Freedom and then served seven months in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and maritime security operations. In addition to other assignments, he served as command chaplain of the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Currently, he is assigned to the Pentagon in the Office of the Chief of Chaplains of the Navy as Director for Plans and Operations.
